Pulling up to the house, we both noticed Eric’s truck parked out front.

“We didn’t have to rush, after all,” Ty observed.

We walked around the side path to the back of the house. I heard Lauren’s laughter as we rounded the corner. “Here they are,” she said. She and Eric were sitting on the top step, both leaning back on opposite rail posts with Brownie lying between them.

“Yes, my dear. Livingston has returned from his journey,” I said. “Hey, Eric, how are you two doing?”

“Fine, just fine,” Eric replied, smiling at Ty and me. “Join us for a drink?”

“We’d love to,” Ty answered.

“Then I better move my butt and get some more wine,” Lauren announced, holding up the empty bottle that was between them. “Another bottle bites the dust.” She stood up from the step and stretched. “Ty, would you care to help me?”

They both went into the house, and I sat down one step lower than Eric.

“My friend,” I said, “that day of the fishing trip, you said I’d be thanking you. Well, here I am to say just that—and not only for what you meant that day. I’m thanking you for your friendship and for introducing me to that great guy.” I motioned with my head toward the back door. I suddenly felt shy and lowered my face, looking down at Brownie who was looking back at me.

“Ryan, all I did was to introduce two lonely men. You did the rest yourselves.”

“You’re very perceptive, and I cannot thank you enough.”

I held out my hand, and he gripped it firmly.
